The Golem : What Everyone Should Know About Science
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press ()
Authors: Harry Collins and Trevor Pinch
Average review score:

aligning science studies
Collins is a big shot in science studies. He introduced a rather strong research tradition in the sociology of science. There he looks at controversies in science and shows that scientific truth is being produced continously by the scientists. Basically, his point is that science is a social enterprise, done by people and that social mechanisms are inherent to scientific results and by no means just flaws in a otherwise pure science.

This little book gives a collection of various case-studies (from relativity to para-science) that have been given a treatment of this kind. The different topics make it easy and interesting to read and show that the same mechanisms work in any scientific field. I particularly like the book because it relates various case-studies that otherwise have little in common with one another.

The Golem at Large : What You Should Know about Technology

Science isn't always a Super Hero
For some, science is a super hero. It helps to save lives with developments like incubators, surgeries, and medicines. Science brings tools like computers, cordless phones, and DVDs into existence. Others, however, view science as a monster that brings with it pollution, greed, and destruction. Science, as explained in this book, is a very human activity with the full range of problems and possibilities of which man himself is capable. Explained within this book, is the findings of science and exactly how science goes about making progress. This is a very interesting and insightful read. I highly recommend it to pracitioners of science and to students who are studying any type of science. I also recommend it to the layman who wishes to know more about how science really works.

Grizzly

Author: Will Collins

Grizzly by Will Collins
A great adaption from the major 1976 motion picture starring Christopher George, Andrew Prine and Richard Jaeckel and was directed by William Girdler by Film Ventures International. Grizzly is much different than the film, the ending is way much better and there's more action in the book and Will Collins describes a lot of how the bear became a killer grizzly! I would recommend it, for the people who are a fan of the film.

Harper Collins Atlas of World History
Published in Hardcover by Harper Collins Publishers ()
Author: Geoffre Barraclough
Average review score:

Great coffee-table history!
Each gorgeous, full-color, oversize spread covers a different historical topic or region through the years, complete with maps, charts, and concise text. Examples include "The Spread of Islam from AD 632", "The Industrial Revolution in Europe", "The Russian Revolution 1917 to 1925." Overall the exposition is engaging and to-the-point. The authors are British; this shows up both in the spelling and in the text's occasionally rather tendentious interpretation of events, particularly those involving the United States "hegemony." For example, the election of Ronald Reagan is attributed to "Nationalism, a tax-payer's revolt, and a widespread wish to be reassured..." and Carter is not even mentioned.

But overall, this book is worth having for the overall quality of its presentation and the sheer volume of little facts packed into its maps and diagrams.

The Hobbit: A Unit Plan
Published in CD-ROM by Teacher's Pet Publications, Inc. (01 March, 2002)
Author: Mary B. Collins
Average review score:

Good basis for Hobbit Unit
This unit plan comes on a CD and is one large PDF file. It has vocabulary lessons, study guides, quizzes, lesson plans, and extra materials, such as crosswords and word searches. The level of the material seems to be about right for my regular ed 7th graders, although it would be nice to have some more complex material as well. My students don't need it, but honors and gifted students could benefit from it. If you are teaching those classes, I would recommend The Hobbit: A Teaching Guide by Kathy Kifer, in addition to this CD.

The major reason I gave this CD 4 stars is that I don't have Adobe Acrobat and transferring the material to a word processor is tedious. I need to edit some of the pages to make them easier to photocopy and use as student handouts. This would be much easier with Adobe Acrobat.

Two minor quibbles: It is Gloin, not Golin and Durin's Day is the dwarves' new year, not the elves'. My students caught the latter error and I was actually rather proud of them for reading that carefully.

All in all, though I do recommend this CD. It has made teaching this book MUCH easier for me.

If I Die on the Jersey Front
Published in Paperback by Orchard Press (April, 1995)
Author: Matthew Collins
Average review score:

One perspective one the future of American race relations.
This is an interesting book. It deals with a potential American future in which American Whites and Blacks spontaneously split up following the assassination of the first Black president and subsequent Black rioting, with Blacks taking most of the South (outside of Texas), as well as New Jersey, eastern Pennsylavania and the area around New York City. The thesis strikes me as eminently plausible but the author seems to suffer from a hesitancy to step too far outside the norms of political correctness enforced by America's new master class. Its good, but it could have been more honest and better
